Audi Looks to the Future
Audi is setting its sights on the future by introducing two new self-driving vehicles. The Audi ElAIne and Audi AIcon are two concept vehicles that push autonomous driving to levels we haven’t seen before. Audi promises that the new AI technology will be “both intelligent and empathetic. They will be able to continually interact with their surroundings and passengers, and thus adapt themselves in a better way than ever before to the requirements of those on board”. With Audi taking the lead, we may be getting self-driving cars sooner than expected.
- Audi was the first car manufacturer worldwide to obtain a testing license for the US states of California and Nevada.
- The Audi A7 piloted driving concept research vehicle drove 900 kilometers (559.2 mi) on the highway from San Francisco to Las Vegas.
- An automated Audi A7 drove in the dense urban traffic of Shanghai, China – a highly complex situation.
- Audi Aicon and Audi Elaine concept vehicles unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show
The next step in the progress of AI is the Audi Elaine concept, an electric coupe-style SUV that, in a few years, will have highly-advanced self-driving functionality, even with no one on board. After the vehicle has been parked in a designated area, it will be able to drive itself to another station, either to recharge, make a delivery or provide another service. It can operate autonomously at speeds of up to 130 km/h. Large touchscreens allow for detailed interaction with the vehicle, which can intelligently be able to anticipate occupants’ needs. As for its performance, the Audi Elaine can generate up to 429 hp (or up to 496 in short bursts) and accelerate from 0-100 km/h in only 4.5 seconds. Its 95 kWh battery, meanwhile, gives it a range surpassing 500 km.
The 4-door Audi Aicon concept does not have a steering wheel, pedals or gauges. Instead, it is designed to recreate the sensation of sitting in a luxurious and comfortable first-class airplane seat. Even longer and more spacious than the extended-wheelbase A8 sedan, the Aicon is looking towards the future of design and technologies with full autonomy. Broadening the existing limits of autonomous driving to unprecedented new levels, the Aicon could be able to drive more than 800 km on a single full charge, and generate up to 348 hp.
Audi AI is looking to fundamentally change how vehicles are used and significantly enhance the time spent on-board. With AI technology, the car will become a third living space alongside our homes and workplaces. Individual customer benefits are Audi’s main focus, as is the clear relation to mobility. The new Audi AI promises intelligent systems and technologies that are targeted toward time, safety, efficiency and customization. The future can’t come soon enough.
